If your teeth are damaged or decayed you may require restorative crown or bridge work.

Often patients ask us about crown and bridge work and are confused between the two. In this article you can find information about each treatment and in which instances they are recommended. Please keep in mind that at your Initial consultation here at Dr Danny Lamm Dental Practice in Malvern East, we will determine the most appropriate treatment for you, based on your unique needs. Remember – everyone is different and so too is your oral state.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO TREATMENTS?

Crowns are restorations that are placed/capped over the affected tooth to modify its shape, size or strength. When a tooth is fractured, has a large old filling, or is severely damaged by decay, we may recommend the placement of a crown or cap. Crowns strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure and can improve the appearance of your smile. Fitting a crown requires at least two visits to our office. Crowns are colour matched to the exact shade of your natural teeth for a natural looking appearance. Once your dental crown procedure is complete, it will look, function, and feel just like your natural teeth.

Bridges – we often use bridge treatments if patients have more than one missing tooth. A Bridge is a device that is anchored to your surroundings, made up of two crowns for the teeth which are placed on either side of the gap. These two anchoring teeth are called ‘abutment’ teeth and the false tooth/teeth are placed in between. These false teeth are called ‘pontics’ and are supported by either natural teeth or dental implants.

THE MAJOR SIMILARITY BETWEEN CROWNS AND BRIDGES

Crown and bridge work are both restorative dental treatments that help repair the problem areas in your mouth. Restoring your teeth is beneficial to your overall health. Our teeth and mouth are inherently linked to our overall health and wellbeing in a number of ways. Good dental health will allow you to chew and swallow food easier which is an essential part of obtaining the nutrients needed for good health. Dental diseases can lead to financial and social burdens as treatment can become costly and time consuming, meaning you may miss time from school or work because of dental pain and treatment. Here at City Smiles, we encourage our patients to maintain proper oral health regimes at home and if treatment is required we recommend coming in as soon as possible to have your mouth treated.

DON’T DELAY TREATMENT

Both crowns and bridges offer a long term solution which can help prevent the cycle of problems that occur when teeth are missing, such as shifting of teeth, decay and jaw bone loss. If you are missing teeth, or are concerned about the condition of you natural teeth, we recommend visiting us at our Malvern East practice. Our team of caring and highly experienced dental professionals can help you restore your oral health and improve your quality of life.
